Dog or Horse?

Punch

There has been some confusion as years have gone by, as to who this gravestone belongs to. Some research has been done into the Rossington Hall history, although there is very little information about Punch.

We always assumed that Punch would be the owners dog. Looking at the date on the gravestone (1873), he could have possibly belonged to Mr. James Browne as he was the owner of the hall around this time. This is just speculation however as we have no concrete history of this time.

It has been suggested now, that Punch was in fact a horse belonging to a family who lived here. Again, we assumed the dog/horse was buried up in the halls grounds, however, after a visit from a lady who used to live here, she said that it was originally buried out in the woodlands. We spoke to an ex school teacher who also reiterated this, saying that some of the school children used to play mischievous games by moving the gravestone around the site.

He said at one point, he even moved the gravestone to sit outside his classroom to keep and eye on it!

For now, Punch’s gravestone is sat in the walled garden area, where we last found it placed.

RIP Punch.
