Dumbwaiter

Take a look at Rossington Hall’s Dumbwaiter. The door has been removed so this wonderful old feature has been revealed.

Dumbwaiters were used before lifts were invented, used to transport food and objects.

Before electronic motors, these were controlled manually by pulling a large rope, which in turn moves the dumbwaiter from floor to floor.  These would have been used back in the Streatfeilds time whereby they would have had food sent up from the servants downstairs, to the butler upstairs to serve. This could however be an original feature of the first hall, as we have no recollection of the date it was made. All we know is that it was manufactured by R.Waygood & Co in London.

We’d love to keep this historical piece on show for people to look at and try out. Problems with this have already arose though especially with issues to do with spreading fire. We’re looking into what we have to do to make it safe so hopefully we can restore this along with the rest of the house.
